I realized about the time we got back from our vacation that I never got around to posting some of our pictures from our trip to the Getty Museum in January.
While there is plenty of art at the museum (we could have spent several days exploring the place) the architecture of the buildings and surrounding grounds is just as amazing and captured our attention before ever setting foot inside. And the gardens … wow. We were there in January so a lot of the plants weren’t blooming but the walk through the gardens is worth the time and effort.
Most of the paintings we looked at were works from the Renaissance, Neoclassic, and Romantic periods but we didn’t take a lot of pictures. We were also treated to a discussion of ancient “illuminated” (illustrated) manuscripts and wandered through a hall with some textile pieces. It’s amazing what people were doing without the technology and equipment we have available today.
It was a nice day that hubby and I got to spend together, away from work. I’ve added some of the better pictures to the slideshow below … enjoy!

What an interesting place! Looks nice and quiet. I mean you can actually “think” without being interrupted by a small being yelling. Or someone rudely talking on their cell phone on high volume.

Yes, it was mostly quiet … inside anyway. Outside there were still plenty of rude people talking loudly on their cell phones. 🙄

Interesting architectural styles. It must be absolutely stunning in autumn.
I love the illuminated manuscripts. I’ve always wanted to do my own on the combination of technologies I’ve learned that would make dragons “real”, but I lack the talent for the artwork, and my wife lacks the time (and it would be a bit beyond her regular work, usually pencil/graphite B&W re-drawings of photos).
And you can actually SEE L.A.! I remember being out there in the mid-80s, and while the air was MUCH better than the 70s, it was still pretty crappy.

This is the first time we’ve ever been there so I can’t say what it looks like in the fall. May not be much different though … the climate is so mild here that plants considered annual in other parts of the country are perennials here.
I was amazed at the process and materials that go into those illuminated manuscripts. Hugely time consuming!
The air quality is a bit better here in winter … right now the same view is probably laden with thick smog. Ick.

I remember back in the early 90s, SAAB was releasing a new car (the 9-5, I think) which not only had advanced electronics on the emissions, but had a platinum-coated radiator on the turbocharger. They tested it in L.A. Turned out the “exhaust” coming out the back was far cleaner than the air going in!

Huh. Hadn’t heard about that one. Doesn’t surprise me though … the air here is pretty bad at times.
