Work has become such a drag. Yeah, I know, it’s work. But up until about a year ago I loved my job. I mean I really loved it … when we are in the midst of building a satellite I get to play with all the goodies that move, more to the point, I have to make them move and make sure they will work when they need to. Yes, there is an entire team of people involved, but as a deployment engineer I am responsible for coordinating everyone’s efforts so we get the test data needed to prove the thing will work. It really is pretty cool.
For the last several years the few of us left from the last bird we built have been dealing with design folks and systems weenies to try and influence the design of a new satellite, or at least to the point where we get hardware that we’ll actually be able to build, let alone test. That’s bad enough (too many of these people just don’t get it) but we’ve also got a ton of reorganizing and corporate shenanigans going on. Between the clueless twits, the mentality of some of the “youngsters” (way too many who think they know more than 30 year veterans) and the current corporate culture (the profit is really all that matters anymore) it’s really become a downer most days.
So why do I keep it up? Two reasons: I see the impact our birds have and a promise I made. Mostly it’s the promise. The fella I worked for on the last build is the most awesome boss I’ve ever had. Truly. He asked me to stick it out with him for at least one more … and because I love working for him, I promised I would. But now we’ve reorganized a couple of times and I’m no longer working for him. We still work together, he’s just not my boss any more. The jury is still out on whether or not the current boss is in the “doesn’t get it” camp or not. But I made a promise and am doing my best to live up to that. So I trudge on. I know what needs doing and generally just go about doing what needs to be done. And for the most part, they leave me alone and let me do my thing.
Anyway, a couple of years ago one of the changes made was to put everyone on a 9/80 schedule. For those not familiar with it, that basically means we work 9 hours each day Monday through Thursday, 8 hours one Friday, and we get the next Friday off. It’s kind of nice. It gives us a day when all the businesses are open to run errands. (hubby is on the same schedule I am even though we don’t work at the same place) Last week was our week with the “off Friday”. And since we took Thursday off to deal with multiple pup appointments, we ended up with a 4 day weekend. But that meant dealing with a very looong 5 day week this week. Or so I thought.
With all the BS going on at the corporate level, I mostly ignore all the emails we get. When checking my emails Wednesday evening before I left, there was one email from our department secretary regarding having timecards done Thursday afternoon. Huh? Wait, we’re supposed to work Friday. As it turns out no, we don’t have to work Friday, Because Thanksgiving falls on the day before a scheduled “off Friday”, whatever rules were set up for the 9/80 schedule dictate that the floating holiday that should have been used for that day be taken on another day … and someone (apparently with at least half a brain) decided that it should be the Friday before 4th of July.
So … not only did I not have to deal with a full 5 day week, I also get another 4 day weekend. And this one is mostly all mine since we don’t have a ton of appointments or errands. Definitely a pleasant surprise. π The rest of it? Well, I’m hoping there are some more pleasant surprises on the horizon. Maybe once I have some hardware to play with things won’t be quite so aggravating.

Psst… Hop a plane and come visit us for the 4th. π
Yeah, yeah. I know. Too damn hot, no way in hell. I can try at least.

LOL … pretty much. π
It’s going to be warm here this weekend. I’m camping out with the AC as much as possible. π

Cool! Even when you love what you’re doing, a long weekend is nice. When you’ve been in a grind, it’s even sweeter!
Just promise me that, in a fit of envy, you won’t stop by a fireworks stand and try to re-create the launch vehicle, okay? π
And you can start with a cold Molson, or a Canada Dry if you don’t do alcohol. Happy Canada Day! (I wish we had finder resolution on Google Earth. Betcha I’m the only one flying Canadian flags within 200 miles! Or would that be 300-some-odd kilometres? π )

ROTFL … I’m not that much of a pyro John!
Sadly, I doubt we will even be able to watch the city’s display this year (you can see most of it from here and we usually sit on the garage roof to view it). Cindy decided years ago that fireworks were evil overlords attempting to take over her yard and while we watch the show she will run around the yard huffing and barking at each explosion. With her knee still healing I’m thinking I’ll need to sit on her to keep her from injuring herself.
I do alcohol occasionally, but usually not beer … though I could toss a little rum in the Coke. π

Our family dog, Sparky, was TERRIFIED of fireworks. We’d take turns in the house trying to calm him. I think I mentioned Rescue Remedy, the herbal calmer for animals? We actually had pills for Sparky, a doggie tranquiliser.
At least you don’t have to worry about a rogue spark burning down your state, like Arizona or Texas. Or have you guys joined the great American drought? We’d be in one, if we hadn’t exceeded May’s rain average by something like 3.5 times normal!
So, can I ask whose birds you work on? Northrop/Grumman? Lockheed Martin? Super secret satellites for a 3-letter government agency that you could tell me, but then need to kill me? π

We keep Rescue Remedy here. I’ve also got some “snacks” that have chamomile and valerian in them (I refer to them as “doggie downers”) and I usually feed her some of those starting several hours before things get too active as far as fireworks shows.
As far as the work stuff, I’d prefer not to mention it “in public” as I’ve found that people knowing where I work tends to lead to me having to fend off folks who want me to “pass along their resume”. π

No problem. I do keep a watch on Boeing, Airbus,Northrop/Grumman, and Lockheed/Martin for their defence aircraft work, and they occasionally put out notices of their space gear going up or being worked on. I also get some Emails from defence analysis groups, as well as Aviation Weekly, so I’m sure I’ve seen notice of your work going past!
I’m hoping the rednecks around here aren’t too obnoxious with the fireworks. Sam, our Mastiff, isn’t exactly happy about the noise, but he does okay.
Ah yes, sitting here, listening to the French triumph over Dominique Strauss-Khan being released pending trial. Even if the maid is a liar, I still hope they lock the creep away. Too dang many men in power without the ability to keep their flies zipped. I’m not really crazy about Biblical punishments, but I think a trip past a miniature guillotine would significantly help this twerp, and put the fear of God (or Elena Bobbitt) into the rest of ’em! π
