This morning one of the groups on Facebook that I belong to posted a link to an article about the spate of ridiculous commercials pushing high-fructose corn sugar that have been airing recently. And while I’m not one to fall for the crap they are pushing in these spots, I found the facts noted in this article even more disturbing than what I was already aware of. 5 Reasons High Fructose Corn Syrup Will Kill You
And I think he’s missed at least one point. I was disappointed he didn’t mention that most of the corn available to consumers (roughly 80% if I remember correctly) has been genetically modified. So in addition to all the problems HFCS can cause, let’s also throw in possible damage to the immune system. I don’t remember where I saw it, may have even been something mentioned during a discussion with my chiropractor, but there have been a couple of studies done that suggest that GMO corn may be causing modifications in the beneficial bacteria that live in our intestinal tract … those little buggers are responsible for proper digestion and are our first line of defense against illness.
Both HFCS and GMO crops are truly scary. It boggles my mind that the folks behind stuff like this are so wrapped up in how much money they can make that they are willing to do so while potentially harming so many people.

I find the HFCS much more scary than GMO. The dangers of all sugars are well known; the ubiquity of the corn type raises the stakes.

I tend to (mostly) agree Joel. It’s astounding how many products contain HFCS. The GMO crop that bothers me more than the corn is soybeans … there is soybean oil in almost as many products as there are with the HFCS. I think I read somewhere that it’s the #1 GMO crop. What bothers me about GMOs is that the folks messing with the genes don’t understand the processes well enough to be sure of what they are doing … something seems to work the way they want and they consider it “done” without regard to other changes, much like some of the side effects in the newer drugs. They claim they are only making plants resistant to pesticides, but what else is getting changed? And how can we be certain those changes don’t affect the animals or people that eat this stuff?

What I find ridiculous is the lengths that some people and companies will go to in order to earn a buck and out-rank an industry competitor. Its disturbing. People’s health and safety should come above any profit margin. Great post!

Thanks sweetie! Wouldn’t it be great if everyone and every company were out to improve everyone’s lives instead of just looking for the fastest way to make cash? I really hope the businesses and investors in this country wake up before it’s too late for all of us.

The greed is what’s getting to me lately. In all industries. I just found out yesterday they will soon be fracking for natural gas here in my county, not all that far from where I live. No hearings. No informing the public. Just a done deal. On top of that, the folks running the show in this state want to open up state lands for drilling and fracking. They don’t seem to care that the process is a blight on the landscape and contaminates the water tables which contaminates the wells and public water systems.
Sorry for the change of subject/rant. I am frustrated by all of it, including HFCS, GMOs, and every other thing designed to make money now without thought for the future or what it does to our health.
